Sapphire - Gemstone, Which Evokes Awe Inspiring Admiration and Carved Feelings

Hey! Look at that, isn’t it dazzling? What sheer brilliance and radiance, the envy and attraction it evokes is something very special. What are we talking about? It’s about a gemstone called Sapphire. A gemstone which has good wordings, attached to its name and for good too and to top it off is referred to by many sobriquets. They are stone of stones, gem of the heavens and the divine gemstone. It has been cherished for thousands of years. The name Sapphire originates from two sources - Greek "Sappheiros" and the Latin "Sapphirus". Ancient Priests used these gems to help them interpret Oracles and were regarded as such a powerful talisman that even when sold to another, the original owner was still protected by the influence of the gem.

It is found in Myanmar (Burma), Thailand, India, Sri Lanka (Ceylon), Tanzania, Afghanistan, Australia, Brazil, Cambodia, Malagasy Republic, Malawi, Pakistan, Zimbabwe (Rhodesia), U S A (Montana, North Carolina).

It has a hardness of 9 and is the second hardest natural mineral known to science. Its gemstone ally diamond is hailed as the hardest mineral. The hardness of sapphire can be partially attributed to the strong and short oxygen-aluminium bonds, these bonds pull the oxygen and aluminium atoms together, making the crystal not only hard but also quite dense for a mineral made up of two relatively light elements.

Colour

The gemstone is like a rainbow present in colour of almost every hue, it occurs in colours ranging from very light to dark blue to violets-blue, bluish-green, yellow, slightly reddish-orange, brown, nearly opaque black, colourless, pink and violet.

Sapphires are most often cut in a cushion shape - a rounded rectangle - or an oval shape. One can also find smaller sapphires in round brilliant cuts and a wide variety of fancy shapes, including triangles, squares, emerald cuts, marquises, pear shapes, baguette shapes, and cabochon cuts, or smooth domes.

Composition

The gemstone should be of a minimum size of 2 carats.

  • It should be set in silver.
  • It should be worn on the middle finger of the right or left hand.
  • Its specific gravity is 4.00 and its refractive index is 1.76-1.77.
  • There should be no black inclusions on this gem and it should not be damaged physically.
  • It should be protected from cracks and chipped edges.
  • Blue Sapphire set on silver should be worn particularly on a Saturday and also only when the moon is in the waxing stage.
  • The gemstone must be immersed in milk for one hour during the first hour from sunrise starting from one Saturday to the next Saturday. After which it should be kept in rose water until the chosen date.
